Found this guy clinging to a piece of dried grass, he has a very "fuzzy" appearance. I know it is a June beetle or May beetle, and that these insects are very hard to identify to species, but if anyone has an idea of the species name for this beetle it would be greatly appreciated.

Ant Mimic Spider

While camping in August at Truman Lake State Park in Missouri I came across this spider, later discovered it is an "Ant mimic" spider, it was one of the prettiest spiders I've ever seen, and only about 1/2 inch in length. It was very fast and moved with rapid jerky movements.

Mason Wasp

This beautiful wasp was busy this past summer hanging around the yarrow, often times I would see him and others almost completely covered in pollen from the flower heads. They didn't seem to be aggressive, as most stinging insects when out gathering food.

Huge Wolf Spider

This huge spider was used for an educational program then released, I managed to get a few pictures of it before it disappeared behind some bark in a tree.

Differential Grasshopper

I found this little guy hiding in a scotch pine.

Dinner Time

Have you ever watched a praying mantis? Whenever I see one stalking it's prey, grabbing it with those awkward short front legs I am reminded of T-Rex. It is a truly apt description for such a vicious and successful hunter and the mantid. These insects almost seem to possess a personality as they follow you with their eyes and head. I've even had them try to crawl onto my camera as I was taking their pictures, that will give you a start when you aren't expecting it, these guys or gals truly are gentle and I have never been bitten by one yet.

Sawfly Larva

Flesh Fly

Female Red Carpenter Ant

Missouri's Majorities

What exactly does that mean? Well I am referring to insects of course. Missouri is blessed with unique and beautiful creatures, many overlooked and some feared. I created this blog in the hopes that you will share with us your unique experiences and observations of the "world of insects"
I've spent the biggest portion of my life fascinated by "bugs" and for the past five years I have taught children about insects through my volunteer work with Missouri Department of Conservation, and I am currently completing a field guide to Missouri Insects. Hope to hear from you all soon.
