They will fly off and set up homestead elsewhere and lose their wings. They will spend the remainder of their days as a fat happy queen laying eggs to grow a new colony. Then on down the road, maybe months or even years later when that colony becomes overcrowded the same thing will happen, winged females will leave and set out for greener pastures. These winged females are called Alates.Shelly Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18367843308248195970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-81302069741892561542010-03-24T19:36:30.454-05:002010-03-24T19:36:30.454-05:00Yay, Spring is here! Yours, esp. of the fly, are great shots, and it did my heart good to see the colony of ladybugs. Have yet to see any in the garden, but I'm not surprised: there aren't any aphids yet anyway (knock on wood).

Why is it that ants grow wings, anyway?Meredithhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11454557080455458675noreply@blogger.com
