I am thinking that I was bitten by a grass spider during my sleep, but at the same time, I suppose it may have been a centipede. I am not for certain but I do know that I was in much pain and my leg was swollen and red for more than a week. I had difficulty walking and I was certain that it would go away on it's own, as it eventually did. Do you think that this could possibly sound like the symptom of a Funnel Web Grass Spider bite? They are consuming vast amounts of insects out of your yard that you may not want around. They are not known to bite humans, and would probably only do so it handled. They sense vibrations as we walk by their web and will retreat. So it is highly unlikely to sustain a bite on your feet. In the morning when the dew is on, they are quite lovely to look at.Shelly Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18367843308248195970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-42466452441744791882012-08-12T14:29:39.948-05:002012-08-12T14:29:39.948-05:00I live in Vancouver, WA and have this in my yard a...I live in Vancouver, WA and have this in my yard and were wondering if they are doing damage to my lawn and are harmful to humans who may be in the lawn disturbing their web while walking or mowing.wildwestgihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12123540718017511849noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-12501021415266558002012-07-18T12:25:16.713-05:002012-07-18T12:25:16.713-05:00I have these all over my yard here in Oregon, my m...I have these all over my yard here in Oregon, my main questian is are they harmful, are they going to bite my kids when they are out in the yard?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-42786927079449864472011-09-01T13:10:41.148-05:002011-09-01T13:10:41.148-05:00Randy----I am constantly amazed at the intolerance...Randy----I am constantly amazed at the intolerance of people for creatures like spiders, insects and even snakes. That is one of the things I love best about my job, I get to educate the public about all these creatures that people deem unsavory. I'm glad you did not give her the info she needed to kill the spiders. I think their webs are little works of art and I love seeing them on my lawn.
I don't have the patience it takes to look for details and use a microscope. She wanted to know what she could spray to get rid of all the nasty spiders that were "spoiling" her lawn. (She was also upset about leaf-hoppers on another occasion.) Anyway, we were less than helpful about telling her how to kill spiders.

I was introduced to the intricacies of spider identification when I used to run electron microscopes for University of Missouri. Occasionally someone would come in and do a detailed study of spider genitalia, just as you mentioned, in order to classify a species. Fascinating stuff.

Randy
http://nadiasyard.comRandy Tindallhttp://nadiasyard.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-61365265593615955792011-08-30T11:19:51.950-05:002011-08-30T11:19:51.950-05:00I am LOVING all of those shots. One morning last fall I would swear there were hundreds. I wonder if the one you describe in Texas is A. pennsylvanica? I read that they sometimes build webs higher off the ground and that the webs are quite large measuring up to several square feet. All the funnel spiders around here seem to build sheets less that a foot in circumference. I have seen those large expansive webs before though in other areas, they are quite impressive.Shelly Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18367843308248195970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-71059466173486104222011-08-29T19:34:51.172-05:002011-08-29T19:34:51.172-05:00Wow, I didn't know all of that about funnel sp...Wow, I didn't know all of that about funnel spiders. Thanks for doing your homework! I absolutely love your shot of the dewdrops.

Funnel spiders don't quite cover the lawns down here in central Texas, but we do have some that will make sheets 3 feet wide, with supportive lines going up to 2 feet above the sheet. They most often do this on the ground, but they'll even make these monster sheets in the low branches of trees.Joe Lapphttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08913058019430933480noreply@blogger.com
