I am not that curious personally and will have to settle for calling it an "it". My spring encounter is at http://springfieldmn.blogspot.com/2011/04/more-than-morel.html.

All rattlers on our property get the benefit of the doubt unless they are within a few feet of the house where we can't take a chance of letting them under the foundation.

The last encounter I had with a timber rattler was 6 feet from our garage which has a partially covered wooden deck floor and stuff all the way around the edges of the remaining gravel floor. If it had gotten inside, my wife would have never entered it again. Like the one we had under the sliding door on our deck, it didn't live.

I have fashioned a snake grabber to try and transplant it the next time. Our neighbors have brought me timber rattlers that we have "donated" to the adjoining Mark Twain National Forest. Unfortunately, as we all move out into nature, nature also moves into us. Congratulations on safely transporting this one back into nature.Bob and Barbhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03734648003161032938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-161099517024438432011-09-13T09:43:10.383-05:002011-09-13T09:43:10.383-05:00Steve if a person isn't careful you are right ...Steve if a person isn't careful you are right it can be like playing with fire. We take a lot of precautions and do everything we can to respect the snake and be extra careful. The people who I work with on this project are all concerned about safety first. I am not the least bit interested in showing off and risking a bite.Shelly Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18367843308248195970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-16037073409055596602011-09-13T09:38:23.992-05:002011-09-13T09:38:23.992-05:00Dr. Mills has a set of stainless steel probes made...Dr. Mills has a set of stainless steel probes made just for sexing snakes. He chooses a probe of the right dimension and inserts it in the vent. If the probe is able to be inserted most or all of the way it is a male. If it meets an obstacle it is a female. Male snakes have two penises and they are inverted, which allows the probe to be inserted so far.Shelly Coxhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/18367843308248195970noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1013316887660017880.post-39268178659628100652011-09-13T09:35:59.842-05:002011-09-13T09:35:59.842-05:00Like playing with fire a bit, it can be safe if al...Like playing with fire a bit, it can be safe if all done properly.I thought of this shaking off hoards of honeybees from my hummer feeders to refill them. Is this the general technique you used?? Of course, I'm sure you had an Official Missouri Department of Conservation Reptilian Genital Probe instead of a paper clip!!!George Simshttp://www.thebugsofboogercounty.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.com
